What was the inspiration to start this business?
My driving force and passion is to help investors build a sustainable retirement by shielding them from hidden forces in the economy and political landscape where they have a disadvantage of not knowing.
Also, I try to level the playing field and give investors access to innovative investment vehicles that were once only available for the highest net worth families. So that middle America could have the confidence and comfort to potential achieving their financial dreams.
When you started your business, did you ever envision that you would be where you are now?
When I started my business, I knew with hard work, ethics, drive, and passion I could be successful. However, I never dreamed I would have attained the success I have. Some of the reasons I may have doubted myself is due to the gender inequality in the financial service industry and being a woman and providing investment advice when most men take care of their finances in their homes. The odds were stacked against me and especially in Southern California, where a lot of investors tend not to trust many due to the unethical practices of some.
Was there ever a time that things didn't fall into place, struggles, or challenges? What were they and how did you get passed it and grow from the experience?
There was a turning point I thought I would leave the industry and that was in 2003. I lived through my first bear market from 2000-2003, I was 41, my client were ready to retire. The market had dropped over -40% over 2 and half years. I doubted myself, I doubted the 60-40 model, and doubted I had anymore value to offer my clients. I consulted my pastor and he talked me into staying in the industry.. I am hear today cause of his guidance.
What was the biggest lesson you learned while starting and growing this business?
That you must budget for the unexpected. Because your emergency fund for business is different then your emergency fund for your home. I over leveraged myself in 2005-2008 before the credit crisis, and struggled for years to recover which I did without filing bankruptcy and for that I am so grateful for this and the lessons I learned. To this day I have no credit card debit, no car loans just a home and building mortgage.
What would you tell a FEM that is struggling in her business and feel like it's too difficult?
Stay focused, Stay Positive, Stay Persistent, Be Honest, Give a lot, Be Grateful for your Daily Successes.
What continues to inspire you to keep on growing your business?
Helping one investor at a time.
Final advice for those thinking of starting a business or looking to grow their current business?
Invest! Invest! Invest! in your business and yourself.
