DLISH - A New Way to Connect Cultures through Table and Home
We partner with a community of artisans, craftsmen, farmers and designers from around to world to create unique and memorable gifting solutions for lovers of food, art and design.
What was the inspiration to start this business?
As an Iranian-American, I grew up in a traditional family where food brought us together around a beautifully set table - a table that has always been a significant place for me. Being an immigrant, my siblings and I faced a lot of discrimination and bullying growing up, so the special moments around the table, eating home-cooked meals and sharing our thoughts and feelings, became our safe haven.
These gatherings and the many that I cultivated around my own table with friends and family, set the foundation for DLISH - a community build around a 'table' where cultures are explored, boundaries are broken and unforgettable memories are made. These treasured moments are gifts that I want to share with all those who believe in enriching relationships while spreading joy.
When you started your business, did you ever envision that you would be where you are now?
As an entrepreneur, I don't think that one can ever really envision a future. For me, the journey is more about evolving while building a business you are passionate about. When I started the business back in 2019, I would have never imagined the many obstacles, rewards and, most importantly, self-growth I would experience. So to answer the question, no. And for that I am grateful.
Was there ever a time that things didn't fall into place, struggles, or challenges? What were they and how did you get passed it and grow from the experience?
Perhaps the biggest struggle is believing in yourself when no one else believes in you. I have to add here that I am very fortunate and grateful to have a very supportive and encouraging family, but unfortunately, they cannot be my entire market. It is more about the times that I have spoken with investors, potential partners and clients in the hopes that they will share my passion for what I am creating, but they do not. It is all the gracious "NOs" that, can become overwhelming. I have learned to not take it personally and to continue to stay true to my passion.
What was the biggest lesson you learned while starting and growing this business?
My biggest lesson has been to not compare my journey with other entrepreneurs around me. It is very easy to get lost in the perceived success of others and to only see the lack around myself, especially in today's world where more than half of our time is spent on social media.
What would you tell a FEM that is struggling in her business and feel like it's too difficult?
There is a special quote that I have framed on my desk that has helped me on this journey, especially at times when it becomes overwhelming - "The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step." Take is one day at a time and always look back to see what you have accomplished.
What continues to inspire you to keep on growing your business?
The many artisans, creators, farmers, craftsmen and designers I have the pleasure of working with and hearing their stories.
Final advice for those thinking of starting a business or looking to grow their current business?
