Whether it’s running around the playground as a kid or navigating the big city as an adult, finding your social group can be an anxiety-inducing experience. Will I be accepted? Is this place the right one for me? How do I even find my people?

Having a support group and community is not just important for our social lives, but our health. A thread found amongst the long-living in “blue zones” nearly all had one thing in common: supportive social networks and lifelong friendships.

Women’s social meetup groups can be found in most cities, but increasingly, there are opportunities that combine professional women and women’s business networks into social gatherings. 

When we’ve asked FemCity members how they came about finding FemCity, some mentioned referrals from current or former members. Others found us by way of Google search. 

“I found out about FemCity in 2023, and it was a time when I was really looking for connection,” said FemCity Nashville President Marlena Karlsson. “Most of the time, with small businesses, we are just needing connection. We’re looking for answers for our small business. Simple questions we don’t have the answers for.”

“And also, we’re lonely! We need that connection. A friend of mine asked me, ‘Come to this beautiful networking group,’’” Marlena remembered. 

“It turned into something more than that. I’ve been to other networking communities where they just shoved cards into your face and didn’t really know me.” 

“Being a solo-preneur or entrepreneur, or both, can be very isolating and be very lonely,” reflected Lisa Solomon, President of FemCity Dallas and member since 2020. “Myself, alongside many of my friends, we look for that community, that network of people where they feel safe, heard, and seen.”

In comparison to other women leadership associations in major US cities, FemCity leads with a friendship-forward approach. Yes, it’s business networking. But it’s also social networking and making personal connections. 

If you’re stressed out about a client (or lack thereof), it can impact how you show up as a friend or partner. Conversely, if you’re experiencing a big life transition, you may begin to falter on your client work.  

Women’s social meetup groups that create a safe space for others to share personal and professional challenges aren’t common. Women’s initiatives and networking organizations like FemCity also foster a sense of community that may be tough to find in the hustle and bustle of adult life or city living. 

It’s no secret that loneliness is an issue in the United States, nor that it can affect women more than other demographics. 

In an interview with Global Member Dr. Melinda C. Hill, she explained the serendipity of coming across the organization.

“It just fell in my lap. I'm so blessed and so grateful to have stumbled upon FemCity.”
