An Interview with FemCity Founder Sarra Lashhab, Trauma Therapist and Advocate for Survivors
Healing. Empowerment. Voice. These are the pillars of Healing Loudly, a trauma-informed therapy practice founded by Sarra, a licensed therapist and FemCity Founder dedicated to supporting survivors of sexual and relational violence.
We sat down with Sarra to talk about her path, the meaning behind Healing Loudly, and how she’s helping women reclaim their voice—one session, one boundary, and one brave conversation at a time.
What inspired you to launch Healing Loudly?
Sarra's journey began with volunteering at a rape crisis center at the age of 15. That first experience sparked a lifelong commitment to helping survivors heal from trauma.
“Survivors often feel silenced or blamed,” she shared. “I created Healing Loudly to give voice back to the voiceless—and to challenge the shame and stigma surrounding sexual and interpersonal violence.”
How do you define ‘healing loudly’?
For Sarra, healing loudly means standing in truth and power. It’s about creating space for survivors to share their stories without shame, blame, or silence.
“Shame thrives in silence. Healing loudly is how we reclaim our voice, our worth, and our right to be believed.”
What makes your therapeutic approach different?
As a trauma therapist, Sarra blends clinical training with deep compassion. She specializes in helping clients navigate:
Boundaries after abuse
Self-compassion practices
EMDR therapy for trauma
Nervous system regulation
Healing the freeze response
Each session is personalized and collaborative, with tools ranging from mindfulness to EMDR to gentle goal-setting.
“I want my clients to feel empowered in therapy. My role is to walk with them—not lead, not fix, but walk alongside their healing journey.”
What are some myths about trauma recovery you wish more people understood?
Sarra explained the importance of educating clients and communities on the lesser-known trauma response: freeze. While fight and flight are well known, freeze can leave survivors stuck in silence, often misunderstood.
“You’re not broken for feeling stuck. That’s your nervous system protecting you. Recovery is about gently showing your body that it’s safe again.”
How do you support survivors who struggle to speak up or ask for help?
Sarra acknowledges that starting therapy is a vulnerable act—especially for survivors who’ve felt dismissed or judged in the past.
“If you're scared to take that first step, you're not alone. But you deserve to heal. You deserve a life that feels good again.”
Her message to women hesitant to begin therapy: You are capable of healing. Your voice matters. You are not what happened to you.
What does empowerment look like inside your practice?
Sarra defines empowerment as helping clients realize their choices, autonomy, and voice. Whether through decision-making tools, boundary setting, or self-compassion exercises, she helps women step back into their power.
“Empowerment is not about doing more—it’s about knowing you have a choice and that your needs matter.”
Can you share what a typical therapy session looks like at Healing Loudly?
Sessions are structured with care, safety, and clear goals. Sarra introduces each new client to informed consent, therapy tools, and weekly intentions. Clients may receive worksheets, somatic practices, or prep for EMDR sessions depending on their goals.
She blends psychotherapy with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to help clients process traumatic memories and shift harmful beliefs like “I’m not safe” or “It was my fault.”
You’ve helped so many survivors—but what about women who haven’t experienced abuse but struggle with vulnerability?
Sarra offers powerful support for anyone navigating the discomfort of being seen or asking for help. She draws from Brené Brown’s research on shame and courage to guide clients toward a reframe:
“Vulnerability isn’t weakness—it’s the birthplace of courage.”
Final words of encouragement from Sarra to survivors:
“What happened to you was not your fault.
I believe you, even if you're still learning how to believe in yourself.
You are capable of becoming the light in your own life.”
