Project Roots: Cultivate Urban Community on Sustainable Living

Project Roots: Cultivate

Bridget Pettis

“Project Roots” is a 501(C)3 non profit project aimed to provide and educate the community with access to a community garden, food bank and mobile soup kitchen. We seek to provide and promote a healthier, natural and more sustainable way of living in urban areas where there is a need.

What was the inspiration to start this business?

Project Roots AZ was founded by Bridget Pettis who goes by BE. Project Roots is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Phoenix, AZ. We focus on ways to educate the community about growing their own food through various educational programs. We support the homeless by feeding them from our local community gardens and mobile kitchen service, supplying hygiene items, clothing and shelter. Project Roots AZ offers seasonal produce bag delivery services in certain parts of the Phoenix area and can be found at the Farmers Market at Spaces of Opportunity.

When you started your business, did you ever envision that you would be where you are now?

We started back in November of 2019. I knew that something had to be done about the healthy food shortage and providing it to those who are in need, it is because of the vision, the need, volunteers and the community who has helped us get to where we are in such a short amount of time.

Was there ever a time that things didn't fall into place, struggles, or challenges? What were they and how did you get past it and grow from the experience?

I think with any business you have plans and sometimes those plans don't always come through but what does always come through are the lessons you need to learn and apply those lessons so you can see less struggle and more success and achievements in your business or non-profit.

What was the biggest lesson you learned while starting and growing this business?

Let go and let God.

What would you tell a FEM that is struggling in her business and feel like it's too difficult?

Don't quit. Stay focused. Remember why you wanted to start this business in the first place and keep it at the forefront of your mind. Everything else will work out in time.

What continues to inspire you to keep on growing your business?

The need for our services. There are many who are without food, shelter, and clothing. As long as that need is out there, we will keep going.

Final advice for those thinking of starting a business or looking to grow their current business?

Jump! It will be hard, but it will be worth it.
