Why Diets Don't Work: Paola Mendez on Rewiring Your Relationship with Food
PAOLA MENDEZ
A FOUNDERS STORY
If you've ever done everything "right" — tracked your food, followed the plan, white-knuckled your way through cravings — and still ended up back where you started, Paola Mendez wants you to know it was never about willpower. As a certified Rapid Transformational Therapy hypnotherapist, she spent years watching the same exhausting cycle play out in her clients: diets tried, weight lost, weight regained, and a little more self-worth chipped away each time. So she built Mochi Zen — an app that pairs weekly hypnotherapy recordings with an AI-powered nutrition tracker to address not just what you eat, but the subconscious patterns driving why you eat. This is the conversation about what's really keeping women stuck, and what it actually feels like to finally feel free.
What was the inspiration for Mochi Zen?
Mochi Zen was inspired by my clients. I had women coming to me over and over again, exhausted from a lifelong cycle of dieting. They had tried every diet only to gain the weight back, leaving them feeling not good enough — plus shame for not having the willpower to make the habits stick.
But as my clients discovered time and again, it was never about willpower. We only have so much of it, and by the end of a day full of decisions at work and at home, it's depleted. That's when the subconscious habits take over; the instinctive patterns that kick in when we feel stressed, angry, or sad. When those patterns run the show, your conscious mind is no longer in charge. And until we address those subconscious patterns, the cycle of losing and gaining weight will continue.
So I used everything I learned with my clients to build a program that addresses all the subconscious patterns keeping women stuck: the inner voice, the emotional eating triggers, the motivation to move, sleep hygiene, hydration, and so much more; delivered through weekly hypnotherapy recordings that reprogram those blocks so you can become the healthy person you deserve to be. The more you listen, the better your results. And alongside the hypnotherapy, the app includes a full AI-powered nutrition tracker; because healing the why behind overeating and supporting the how of healthy eating work best together.
How does it help women navigate wellness, midlife challenges and overall well-being? What do you hope to create with the app?
I want to empower women to love themselves and make loving choices that lead to wellness. And I want it to be easy.
This is especially true for women navigating midlife; a time when the patterns we've carried for decades start to feel heavier, hormones shift, and the emotional eating that used to be manageable becomes impossible to ignore. RTT goes directly to the root of those patterns at any age, and that's why so many of my clients describe it as the first thing that has ever actually worked.
So many of my clients say the same thing after our work together: they finally feel free. Free of the food noise and constantly thinking about food. Free of the restrictions they had placed on themselves and their lives. Free to finally live. So many of them were waiting to lose the weight before they'd go on a trip, apply for a job, go to the beach, wear the dress. And they feel free because the wait is finally over; and this time, for good.
Where can women find the app and start using it?
Mochi Zen is available at mochi-zen.com, on the Apple App Store, and on Google Play. There's a free tier to get started, and a 7-day free trial available for the full program.
Paola Mendez has never taken the expected path twice. After a decade as a software developer in Miami, she walked away from tech at 30, not because something went wrong, but because something was missing. What followed was fifteen years of building: first Coral Gables Love, a hyperlocal lifestyle blog, then The Blogger Union, a national community of content creators that grew to 12 chapters across the US. Then, at 39, a 19-year relationship ended; and for the first time, Paola let herself ask what she actually wanted. That question led her to yoga, then to RTT (Rapid Transformational Therapy) hypnotherapy, trained under world-renowned therapist Marisa Peer, and ultimately to founding Mochi Zen, a weight loss app that combines hypnotherapy-based audio sessions with AI-powered nutrition tracking. Today, Paola runs her private hypnotherapy practice Pao Hypnosis (paohypnosis.com), Coral Gables Love, and Mochi Zen (mochi-zen.com); and she joins us to talk about what it really takes to keep reinventing yourself, and what she's learned from doing it more than once.
