An Interview with Cynthia Johnson, Founder of BuyHouseCondo.ca
1. What inspired you to dive into real estate at just 26, especially in such a competitive market like downtown Toronto?
I was working in the fashion industry in downtown Toronto—surrounded by creativity, energy, and ambition every day. I loved the pace, I loved the people, but deep down, I knew I wanted more than just a seat at someone else’s table—I wanted to build my own.
I’ve always been a people person who thrives in high-pressure environments, so the fast pace and fierce competition of Toronto real estate didn’t scare me—it energized me. I saw an opportunity to build something of my own, to help people make life-changing decisions, and to prove that a young woman could not only hold her own in a male-dominated space—but thrive. So I took the leap. I’ve never looked back.
2. You’ve since moved to Hamilton and now cover the GTA and beyond. What are the biggest shifts you’ve noticed between Toronto’s condo market and Hamilton’s housing scene?
It’s truly night and day.
Toronto’s condo scene is all about vertical living, convenience, and that fast-paced lifestyle. It attracts first-time buyers, investors, and professionals who want to be at the center of everything. Every square foot matters, and decisions are made quickly in a high-stakes environment where timing is everything.
Hamilton has a completely different energy. It’s more spacious, more community-driven, and buyers get much more home for their money. There’s a beautiful blend of historic charm and urban revival happening here, and people are starting to realize they don’t have to sacrifice budget—or peace of mind—for character and convenience.
What’s especially interesting is how many of my Toronto clients are now turning to Hamilton. They’re craving space, lifestyle balance, and breathing room—and Hamilton delivers.
3. With over 15 years of experience, what are some key lessons you’ve learned—especially for first-time buyers?
Real estate is as much about mindset as it is about the market.
For first-time buyers, the process can feel overwhelming—like everyone else got a secret playbook. But the truth is, you don’t need to know everything. You just need the right guide.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned? Timing the market is less important than time in the market. Waiting for the “perfect” time can often mean missing out altogether. If you’re financially and emotionally ready, that’s your green light—regardless of what the headlines say.
Also, trust your gut—but let the data guide your decisions. Buying a home is emotional, but staying grounded in facts like resale potential, location trends, and long-term goals is key.
And lastly, surround yourself with professionals who empower you—not pressure you. Your agent, mortgage broker, inspector—they should be your team, not your stress.
4. You also run a mortgage brokerage. How does that give your clients an edge when financing a home or investment property?
Running a mortgage brokerage alongside my real estate business allows me to be a full-circle problem solver for my clients.
They don’t have to wait days for answers or chase down their lender. I’m available in real-time to provide clarity and solutions—whether that means getting pre-approved on the spot, addressing unexpected financing questions, or navigating tough negotiations with lenders.
It’s a huge advantage—especially in competitive markets where timelines are tight and confidence is everything.
5. You’re passionate about helping women build wealth through real estate. Why is this mission so personal to you?
It starts with my mother.
She was a single mom who worked tirelessly to provide for me. But despite her strength and work ethic, she didn’t have access to the financial knowledge or resources to move beyond survival. I saw how hard it is when you're trying to do everything alone without anyone showing you the ropes.
That experience planted a seed in me. What I’ve been able to build through real estate, I want every woman to have access to.
Real estate is a game changer. It gives you options, independence, and the power to make decisions on your own terms. When women have their own money, they have freedom—and to me, that’s everything.
That’s why I support my female clients with personalized guidance, real education, and the confidence to step into real estate—whether it’s buying their first home or building a long-term investment portfolio.
6. The real estate market is always evolving. What advice do you have for women looking to make smart, strategic decisions in today’s market?
Start with your vision. What do you want to build? A secure home base? Generational wealth? Passive income?
Once you’re clear on your goals, it becomes easier to take aligned action. Today’s market still holds opportunities—especially for those willing to look beyond headlines and get creative. Whether it’s urban condos, suburban homes, or rural investment properties, there are ways to make the numbers—and the lifestyle—work.
And please, don’t let fear stop you. The market can feel overwhelming, but small, strategic steps—taken with the right support—can lead to long-term financial success.
Real estate is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay curious, stay informed, and trust the process.
7. Congratulations on your RE/MAX Hall of Fame award! What does that recognition mean to you?
Thank you—it’s incredibly humbling.
To me, the RE/MAX Hall of Fame award isn’t just a trophy. It’s a reflection of the relationships I’ve built, the trust my clients have placed in me, and the work I’ve done to serve them with heart and integrity.
This award is meaningful because it reinforces my belief that success in real estate isn’t about transactions—it’s about transformation. It’s about helping people step into new chapters with clarity and confidence.
8. You’ve built your business on authenticity and community. How has that shaped your success?
Authenticity and community are the foundation of everything I do.
From day one, I’ve been honest with my clients—about the market, about the process, and about what’s best for them. People can feel when you’re genuine, and that’s what builds trust.
Community means being there not just at closing, but before, during, and long after the sale. It means celebrating wins, navigating changes, and offering support that extends beyond contracts.
True success for me isn’t just measured in sales—it’s in the impact I leave behind. When my clients feel empowered, informed, and supported—that’s the real win.
9. Outside of real estate, you're a passionate advocate for rescue dogs and rural living. How does that lifestyle shape your approach?
Living on 4 acres with my rescue dogs and chickens is the lifestyle I didn’t know I needed.
It’s grounding, peaceful, and a daily reminder of what home really means. Morning coffee on the porch, pups running wild, chickens clucking in the background—it’s a full-circle moment that shapes how I help others find their own version of “home.”
That lifestyle deeply influences my work. I understand what it means to need space for pets, gardens, trails, and peace. I help my clients find homes that align with how they want to live—whether that’s downtown or deep in the countryside.
10. What’s next for you?
I’m focused on growing my business in a way that’s aligned, sustainable, and truly client-centered.
That includes expanding into more communities across the GTA and beyond, and continuing to highlight those hidden gems where quality of life and opportunity go hand-in-hand.
I’m also creating more educational resources—especially for women—because knowledge is power. I want to help more people feel equipped, confident, and supported on their real estate journey.
And personally? I’ll always advocate for rural living, rescue dogs, and real estate that creates freedom and joy.
