Swim Global Project by Nathalie V Martin: Supporting aquatic education worldwide

The Swim Global Project is a swimming education platform geared to reduce drownings worldwide. Drowning is still one of the most common causes of accidental death in children, so being able to swim is an essential life-saving skill. The Swim Global Project supports global movements of lifesaving and swimming education by bringing experts together and mobilizing them to develop programs in areas that otherwise would not have opportunities to do so.

What was the inspiration to start this business?

My love for swimming is the driving force behind my program but more importantly it is incomprehensible to me that drowning continues to be a leading cause of death world wide. Nearly half a million people die each year from drowning, yet there is still insufficient funding and awareness to support a worldwide movement to reduce this horrific data..

When you started your business, did you ever envision that you would be where you are now?

Every day I wake up and feel grateful that I am able to do the work that I do. I am able to work with organizations and people who care about the drowning prevention mission worldwide, and this brings me the most joy and inspiration.

Was there ever a time that things didn't fall into place, struggles, or challenges? What were they and how did you get passed it and grow from the experience?

The nature of teaching swimming means that we cannot social distance so COVID - 19 has definitely changed the focus on the Swim Global Project's current mission. For now, I focus on education and bringing experts together virtually until it is safe to travel and be together again.

What was the biggest lesson you learned while starting and growing this business?

You need to stay the course. It takes time to build momentum. It also takes a few trials and errors to get to the perfect formula. The business is always shifting, and you have to be prepared to lean in and go with the flow (no pun intended). You also need to others to believe in your work. This is the part I love the most. When your network is supportive and want to see you succeed.

What would you tell a FEM that is struggling in her business and feel like it's too difficult?

It's normal. Focus on what is working. Keep the negative self talk at bay when things get hard. Remember why you started, and stay the course.

What continues to inspire you to keep on growing your business?

I love the impact of my work. I have built incredible relationships that span decades and they become family. To know that we are saving lives is all worthwhile.

Final advice for those thinking of starting a business or looking to grow their current business?

Don't do it for the money. Money will come but do it because you want to shift your lifestyle. You won't be working less, but you will be working towards your dream.
